Located just 23 miles east of Kansas City, Grain Valley’s population has been booming since the 1970s.
Doubling from 1970 to 1980, Grain Valley has grown from 1,327 at that time to 13,236, and by factors over 171 percent and 149 percent from 1990 to 2000 to 2010. That rapid growth earned the city a spot on the Kansas City Business Journal’s list of projected fastest growing cities from 2014-2019.
Located north and south of Interstate 70, with Blue Springs just west and Oak Grove just east, Grain Valley’s story starts in 1878 when the first plat was filed. The city incorporated as a fourth-class entity in 1945.
History holds well for the Bank of Grain Valley, established in 1905 and still located in its original building. Nationally, and more recently, OOIDA (Owner-Operator Independent Driver’s Association) opened its national headquarters in 1973.
As a fourth-class city, Grain Valley is governed by a mayor and board of aldermen. A city Park Board oversees the planning, maintenance and improvements of the parks system.
Grain Valley School District has over 4,200 students with four elementary schools, two junior highs and Grain Valley High School in the system. Grain Valley High has been ranked in the top 5 percent of high schools in the United States. In 2016, voters approved a $9.5 million bond issue for classroom renovations, additions, parking, athletic upgrades and other needs.

There is nothing odd about the growth the City of Peculiar has been experiencing the last few years, with increases in new housing permits, construction and population becoming the norm as more residents retreat to the suburbs of Kansas City and northern Cass County.
In fact, since the 2010 census (4,600 population), Peculiar has gained nearly 200 residents.
As the story goes, settlers to this north-central Cass County area back in 1868 were debating on what to call this newfound town. As they lobbied with the post office for potential names, one asked for something “sort of peculiar.” Soon after, the Postmaster recommended just that: Peculiar, Missouri. And to this day, the name has stuck.
With I-49 slicing diagonally through Peculiar, the city is bordered by Belton and Raymore to the north and Harrisonville to the east, with plenty of room for growth near 211th Street, east to State Route J, west at State Route YY and particularly south of 233rd Street and southwest of I-49/71.
The core of Peculiar has also seen a resurgence as the Downtown Peculiar Arts and Culture District was formed in 2007. The formation and foundation of the arts district has been to drive tourism, promote public art and become a hub of creativity, culture and entrepreneurship through small business enhancement.
The Raymore-Peculiar School District serves the area with elementary students attending Shull or Peculiar elementary schools, Bridle Ridge or Eagle Glen intermediate, Ray-Pec East Middle School and Ray-Pec High School.
